What does the body of an NFL player look like?
I began a photographic project to find out.
Offensive linemen are generally fairly tall and huge human beings, weighing
over 300 lbs. They function to create a wall to protect the quarterback
against oncoming defensive players, and to create gaps
in the defensive line for running backs.
In direct opposition as to body type, are defensive backs who are nimble,
quick and seem to be able to run sideways and backwards almost as fast
as straight ahead. They carry no extra bulk and seem to be built
like gymnasts or sprinters. They are gifted athletes who can run, jump and
seemingly fly, functioning to prevent the quarterback from completing a pass
to a receiver, and to tackle running backs who have broken through the defensive line.
Defensive linemen are similarly very large and also powerfully quick,
their main function is to rush the quarterback and stop running backs.
The most physically and functionally impressive, in my opinion, are linebackers.
They are large men, have great muscularity and are, fast and powerful.
One of the many daunting challenges for most photographic
projects is access to subject matter.
This project was the most difficult of any of the many dozens I have experienced.
It was so difficult to get NFL players to my studio that after three
years and 40 players and having answered my initial question
to my own satisfaction, I decided to end the project.
Still, it was an enriching experience and I loved working with and
conducting in depth interviews with these rare and special people.
