I wanted to make an image of the signature “T” for the New York Times Magazine using dancers to form the shape of the letter (the Germanic font is often known as black or Gothic type).

My lovely cast was made up of 10 dancers:  Leah O’Donnell, Emma Stein, Beth Crandal, Tamayo Toler, Sara Antkowiak-Maier, Lisa Okragly, Amy Ryerson, Kristin Draucker, Dawn Noel and Gwyneth Larson.

I’ve written previously: there are no better models for such photo-shoots than dancers—-they hear the direction and do it!

I have an aluminum ladder hinged to the ceiling of my studio so that I only need to release the hinges at one end to bring that end down to the floor. This lets me climb up the ladder to the height of the ceiling in order to be able to photograph straight down.

I drew the Times “T” on my computer and digitally projected its image onto a 12 foot piece of clean, seamless paper. I traced its form onto the paper, put the paper on the floor centered under the ladder. This outline was used to place the dancers into the shape of the “T.”

I directed the 10 dancers, dressed in silver lame “hoodies,” to stand in place in each section of the outlined “T” and I made photographs.

Like pieces of a puzzle, I then combined each segment in photoshop.

It worked.
