On Seeing, A Journal Blog #188

A few years ago, my photographic studies of pregnancy was published in a large book, WITH CHILD, by Glitterati, Inc.

Pregnancy is a temporary period in a woman’s life when changes take place that I think of as a kind of biological sculpture.  Though temporary, many women have told me it seems to go on forever.

In some cases, I followed and photographed several women throughout their nine months of expectation.

In making images for what became my book, the challenge was to “see” pregnancy in every way I could, to capture the full spectrum of sculptural power of women, to use the apt Biblical description, “Great with child.”

After the book was published, we received a call from Axel Breuer, a gallery owner in Munich, Germany. He had seen the work and wanted to do a gallery show.

Axel Breuer, his wife, Chrystal, and Beverly outside of his Munich gallery. We made very large prints of a number of the images and shipped them off to Munich. And when the time came, we attended the gala and well-attended opening.
